What does private health insurance cover?

Private health insurance offers you the peace of mind that if you fall ill, you’ll have our support in finding you the care you need, so you can focus on getting better.

Health insurance is usually designed to cover treatment of new medical conditions that begin after you join. Contact us here at AXA Health to discuss your underwriting options if you have any pre-existing conditions.

A pre-existing condition is any disease, illness or injury that:

  • you have received medication, advice or treatment for in the five years before the start of your cover, or
  • you have experienced symptoms of in the five years before the start of the cover whether or not the condition was diagnosed.

Our Personal Health plan is our next generation of private health insurance. The plan offers you the choice and convenience you need, when you need it. Whatever your budget, there’s a plan to suit you — we believe that great health cover is for everyone.

What's covered by our Personal Health plan?

Our plans are designed for the treatment of eligible new conditions that arise after you join. Our Personal Health plan is what’s known as a modular plan – there is a wide range of core cover and you can then choose from the extra cover options listed below:

Benefits of Personal Health include:

  • Extensive heart and cancer cover and care*, including radiotherapy and chemotherapy
  • Enhanced family cover
  • 24-hour telephone access to support and guidance from our nurses and counsellors (with midwives and pharmacists available during the day).
  • Access to more than 250 private hospitals listed in our Directory of Hospitals
  • Fast Track Appointments – finding you the right specialist, at the right time and place for you, when you add the Out-Patient option to your cover.
  • Quick access to CT, MRI and Pet scans on a specialist referral

*Availability of cover dependent on medical history and cover chosen.

Extra cover options available:

  • Out-patient
  • Therapies
  • Mental Health*
  • Dentist and Optician Cashback
  • Extended Cover
  • Travel Cover (There are exclusions to this cover, for example, we do not cover sports activities that are listed as excluded in the membership handbook)

What’s not covered?

To keep subscription costs down for everyone, there are some things we won’t pay for.

These include:

  • Treatment of medical conditions that you had or had symptoms of before you joined (unless you’ve switched from another plan and have underwriting called ‘continued medical exclusions’)
  • Pregnancy and childbirth
  • Treatment of on-going, recurring and long-term conditions, such as diabetes or asthma. We also call these ‘chronic conditions’
  • Cosmetic treatment (except for birthmarks and prominent ears under our enhanced family cover)
  • There are some specialists whose costs we don’t pay in full, so it’s important you call us if you need to claim

*Availability of cover option dependent on medical history.

Can I choose a specific consultant and hospital?

Here at AXA Health we always recommend that you ask your GP for an open referral. That’s a referral that does not name a specialist. With an open referral, you’ll have a choice of specialist from our Directory of Hospitals, and our team will make your appointment for you.

Can I buy cover for my family?

You can add family members to your cover, including babies, at any time.

You can normally add:

  • Your partner. It does not matter whether you are married, in a civil partnership, or living permanently in a similar relationship.
  • Any of your children or your partner’s children.

If you would like to add a new baby to your cover, you can normally do this from their date of birth, so long as you call us within three months of their birth. We normally will not need details of their medical history. Cover exclusions may apply to babies born after fertility treatment, or following assisted reproduction, or who you have adopted.

What if I already have health insurance?

Switching to us at AXA Health is easy – we’ll do all the paperwork for you. In most cases, your cover can continue without any interruptions.

If you can answer a couple of questions about your health favourably, we may cover you with no changes to your previous medical underwriting, subject to the terms and conditions of the new plan you choose.
