What does private health insurance cover?

Private health insurance, put simply, is a plan that offers you quick access to eligible medical treatment, from diagnosis to a comfortable hospital stay depending on chosen cover – whilst avoiding NHS waiting lists.

Health insurance is usually designed to cover treatment of new medical conditions that begin after you join. Contact us here at AXA PPP healthcare to discuss your underwriting options if you have any pre-existing conditions.

A pre-existing condition is any disease, illness or injury that:

  • you have received medication, advice or treatment for in the five years before the start of your cover, or
  • you have experienced symptoms of in the five years before the start of the cover whether or not the condition was diagnosed.

Our Personal Health plan is our next generation of private health insurance. The plan offers you the choice and convenience you need, when you need it. Whatever your budget, there’s a plan to suit you — we believe that great health cover is for everyone.

Can I choose a specific consultant and hospital?

Here at AXA PPP healthcare we always recommend that you ask your GP for an open referral. That’s a referral that does not name a specialist. With an open referral, you’ll have a choice of specialist and our team will make your appointment for you.

Can I buy cover for my family?

You can add family members to your cover, including babies, at any time.

You can normally add:

  • Your partner. It does not matter whether you are married, in a civil partnership, or living together permanently in a similar relationship.
  • Any of your children or your partner’s children.

If you would like to add a new baby to your cover, you can normally do this from their date of birth, so long as you call us within three months of their birth. We normally will not need details of their medical history. Cover exclusions may apply to babies born after fertility treatment, or following assisted reproduction, or who you have adopted.

What if I already have health insurance?

Switching to us at AXA PPP healthcare is easy – we’ll do all the paperwork for you. In most cases, your cover can continue without any interruptions.

If you can answer a couple of questions about your health favourably, we may cover you with no changes to your previous medical underwriting, subject to the terms and conditions of the new plan you choose.
